Box truck rental company moves to Chicago
CHICAGO — Box trucks rented by the Chicago Fire Department will soon be operated by Chicago’s first privately owned company.
The move comes after years of lobbying by the company’s owners and after the company was awarded a $7 million grant from the state in 2015.
The Fire Department has struggled to keep up with demand for the truck because of its relatively small fleet.
The department’s truck fleet has dwindled to about 200 vehicles.
The company is leasing its trucks from a fleet of about 100 vehicles, including a fleet that now includes about 200 boxes.
The truck company has said it’s looking to build a fleet with a total of more than 1,000 vehicles, which could be about 300 trucks.
The company said it would be able to start rolling out the trucks by the end of 2018.
